TICA's World of Cats

Image

Come join the fun! Meet the Family, Friends & Felines at TICA's World of Cats, sponsored by Dr. Elsey Precious Cat and hosted by the America's Family Pet Expo at the Orange County Fairgrounds, Costa Mesa, CA.

TICA embraces pedigree cats, new breeds, has special Household pet classes and a Jr. Exhibitor program. TICA's Junior Exhibitor program educates and mentors the future cat fancy through our juniors. TICA is an international association fostering the cat fancy world-wide.

The show held April 10-12, 2015, will have about 55 breeds in competition! There will be many breed booths available with pedigreed and new breeds of cats on preview. Their owners will be able to answer your questions about temperaments, habits, intelligence, activity levels, and of course, the 'love factor' and adaptability.

The History Project!

Image

Every endeavour of man has a history. Some histories are recorded and some not. Some have been painted on cave walls, others carved into stone. Some are written on paper, or take the form of art on canvas. And some are compiled into books, while others are recorded on film or on audio technology, and many, like this project, are now digitized.

But whatever form they take, there is an underlying passion behind them, a desire to tell a story and to share a knowledge learned from an actual experience, each relevant to a certain time and place, and often in a long forgotten context.

Winston Churchill once said, "The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see." Read More

A Picture Purrfect Look at 'Hollywood Cats'

Image

Gareth Abbott takes us inside his book "Hollywood Cats" with a look at some talented kitty performers of Hollywood's Golden Age and the human co-stars who loved them.

For anyone who loves cats it will come as no surprise that Audrey Hepburn recalls the famous scene from Breakfast at Tiffany's, when she threw 'Cat' from the New York cab into the pouring rain as the most distasteful thing she ever had to do on film. She probably shouldn't have worried as we know that Orangey, the real name of the feline thespian who played Holly Golightly's 'poor slob without a name' in the film, was a seasoned pro who took it in stride and was well rewarded indeed for getting wet.

Hepburn and Orangey are just two of the hundreds of stars that share equal billing in Hollywood Cats, a book that has not only allowed me to indulge both a love of photography and cinema, but expose the natural affinity that existed between so many of Hollywood's fabled cast and our feline friends. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Persian Cats

Image

The incidence of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Persian cats seems to be rising, in part due to its ability to be detected by cardiac ultrasound. This disease is a heart enlargement which has been shown to be at least partially due to genetic inheritance in breeds that have already been studied (i.e. Maine Coon & Ragdoll), and is currently being studied genetically in the Persian cat. Sudden cardiac death takes its toll on Persian cat breeders and pet owners with HCM cats dying at a premature age.

So how can you help? The current focus is research to find a genetic marker for this disease in Persian cats. A study was launched for this breed in 2008. We now have an avenue to fund this critical research. Winn Feline Foundation, the organization that provides the largest amount of funding yearly to feline research, established the Persian HCM Research Fund. $15,000 is the minimum required for a breed specific grant. There is also a limited time period in which to raise the funding.

You can make a contribution to this fund via Winn Feline Foundation by phone at 888-963-6946, requesting the funds be attributed to the Persian HCM Fund. Read More

Florida Win!

Image

On December 2nd, Lee Country Florida repealed Ordinance #14-04, which established breeder licensing, onerous reporting & fee schedules for breeders, and a general micromanagement style of control over all breeders. The laws in Lee County have now reverted to the previous, completely workable system. This is a big win for Lee Country residents, and TICA's Legislative Committee would like to thank Roeann Fulkerson & her husband, Jim, for making the drive to stand up for TICA. The Committee would also like to thank SE RD Laurie Patton for "Putting Her Money Where Her Mouth Is" and offering to pay gas for any other TICA members who wanted to attend the meeting. Truly Above and Beyond!
