Quietly Singing Happy Birthday

Our TICA iCATS Feline Agility after cats signed up had a 2 hour wait to run the agility course. Can we say success! Donations went to the Cat Care Society and I think a shelter cat may have even won the Grand Prize for the shelter. The iCATS Feline Agility top prize of $125 for the fastest time was won by Donna, a Cat Care Shelter cat attending the event looking for her adoption to fur-ever home.

The expo went very well. There were a core group of 5 helpers who brought cats and were there the entire weekend with me. We also had some club members from the Chicago area cat club, Prairie State Cat Club, who came throughout the weekend in two hour shifts with their cats. We ended up with a nice variety of cats that the public really seemed to enjoy. We passed out roughly 750 coloring books and the same in posters.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves working the expo. Everyone took turns handing out posters and coloring books and we all took great pleasure in speaking and educating people on TICA and what we do as an organization. I was very proud, but not surprised, of the wonderful job the Great Lakes region did on our first venture. We already have some ideas on how to make some improvements for the next time we have an opportunity like this.

I personally want to thank Geri Mckerlie for storing all the supplies from the EO. She was a tremendous help to me in organizing this and making it the huge success it was for both TICA and the Great Lakes.

BRIA FUND 2016 AIN'T NO STOPPING US NOW RAFFLE UNDERWAY!

It's that special time of year when the Winn Foundation and The Bria Fund hold our biggest annual fundraiser in support of FIP research. Last year's raffle helped fund three important FIP projects for 2016. Amazing research involving treatment, testing, and better understanding of other aspects of FIP is on-going, thanks to the generosity of our FIP family and other supporters. We have come so far, completing pieces of the FIP puzzle, but we have a way to go before every precious kitten or adult cat will be free from this evil and unforgiving disease. Our hope in ending FIP is in research and on-going donations to continue it.

How pets are helping advance cancer care

TICA Ad (Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
Pet owners in the US and Canada are part of research involving experimental cancer therapies that could one day also help humans with cancer. In one study, scientists are using the transplant-rejection drug rapamycin in an effort to prevent recurrence of osteosarcoma, a disease that commonly strikes dogs but also affects people, usually children, teens or young adults. Another trial involves a two-vaccine immunotherapy protocol aimed at reducing tumor size and helping the immune system target cancer cells that are metastasizing in dogs with osteosarcoma, and a similar protocol is being tested for feline mammary cancer.

Give your cat a human voice with 3D printed Temptations Catterbox talking cat collar

As cat owners across the world know, communicating with your pet can be a bit difficult. You know he or she wants something when meowing, but what exactly? Does she like the expensive treats you bought her? Fortunately, the solution is here. The team over at Temptations Lab have joined forces with London-based ad agency adam&eveDDB to develop the Catterbox: a 3D printed cat collar that analyzes your cat's noises and plays a pre-recorded human voice in response, so you know exactly what your pet is saying. After centuries, we can finally feel a cat's appreciation.
