Written by Rene Knapp, long time TICA member and dedicated cat lover.

What Is Rabies?

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including cats and dogs. It is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.

How Do Pets Get Rabies?

Pets typically contract rabies from wildlife such as raccoons, bats, foxes, or skunks. Any bite or scratch from an infected animal can lead to transmission.

Recognizing the Signs of Rabies in Pets

Behavioral Changes

Infected pets may become aggressive, withdrawn, or display unusual behavior.

Physical Symptoms

Look for drooling, difficulty swallowing, paralysis, or staggering.

Preventing Rabies in Your Pets

  • Ensure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.
  • Keep cats indoors and dogs on a leash during walks.
  • Avoid contact with wildlife or unfamiliar animals.
  • Report stray or sick animals to animal control.

What to Do If You Suspect Rabies

Immediately contact your veterinarian and local health authorities. Do not attempt to handle a suspected rabid animal.
