From the President’s Desk: A Message from TICA President Vickie Fisher

VickieFisherWelcome TICA friends to our July newsletter.

As most of you know, last month the TICA Executive Office fell victim to flood water from severe storms in the Harlingen, Texas-area.  Arriving for work, our staff found a pretty soggy environment left after water, an estimated 8.5 inches deep, had found its way through the office overnight.

But our employees are troopers to say the least. While prevented from entering our offices during cleanup, a small group of staff gathered the Office’s three laptops and relocated to the home of Assistant Business Manager, Frances Cardona, where they could access TICA’s data base “in the cloud” to work on member requests.

With an old file room cleared out and cabinets relocated to another building, carpet and some walls removed, our resilient staff created a mini “call site” environment and are back in the office. Obviously, much work still needs to be done to get things back to normal.

If any of you would like to send them a card of thanks, I’m sure hearing from you all would brighten the day. (No emails or telephone calls!!!!! LOL) Here is the EO mailing address:

TICA
306 Jackson
Harlingen, Texas 78550

Despite the adversities, all of our Regional and International Winners have received their award notifications and certificates. Congratulations to you all!  (Hope to see many of you use those new colorful jpegs to brag about your wins!)

Vickie

Spanish Breed GuideNew Guide to TICA Breeds Available in Spanish

Spanish-speaking cat lovers around the world now have a new reason to celebrate. After many years of research, TICA South America Regional member Patricia Porciuncula, has created a guide to TICA recognized breeds in Spanish.

The Guide, written entirely in Spanish, includes TICA breed standards, history, characteristics, and photos of each breed. TICA judges and breeders from South America, Europe and USA also helped interpret TICA Breed standards for the Guide.

The book, available only in downloadable form, can be obtained by contacting Patricia at patipor@hotmail.com.

“I’m excited to finally share my many years of searching for knowledge with people who speak Spanish and wants to learn,” said Patricia. “With the completion of this work, my dream that all Spanish-speaking cat-lovers will have access to a guide where they can meet and learn to identify different breeds of cats recognized by TICA has come true.”

TICA Recognizes Ten Second Litter Box Founder Michael W. Jackson with TICA Endorsement of Excellence Award

Recognized for transforming the litter box, TICA bestows its newest Endorsement of Excellence Award to Ten Second Litter Box Founder, Michael W. Jackson.

Michael invented a disposable litter box back in the late 1980’s because he was tired of cleaning foul cat waste out of plastic boxes. At the time, there wasn’t anything available on the market. In 2006 the invention was featured on the TV Show “American Inventor” however, until 2014 Michael’s work for the military in Iraq kept him from pursuing the dream of taking his idea to market. Several years later, with the help of company partner Del Lott, Ten Second Litter Box was found.

Ten Second Litter Box allows those who share their lives with cats a quick and easy disposal litter solution. The system includes an easy to assemble water-resistant box that folds and locks when you are ready to change your cat’s litter or offer a fresh new box. There is no scooping through smelly litter and cleaning boxes. Residue is contained and cats have a clean environment every week. Boxes can be used openly or a “kitty cottage” can be purchased to fit over the box to help keep litter and debris contained in the box. Those wishing to extend the life of their boxes can also use scoopable litter.

For more information on Ten Second Litter Box products visit them online at https://www.tensecondlitterbox.com or on Amazon.

The Cat Writers Association (CWA) awarded Zachary Nugent the “Kari Winters Rescue and Rehabilitation Award” on May 18 during the CWA 25th Anniversary and Awards Banquet in St. Louis, MO. The Award, sponsored annually by TICA, was given to Nugent for his winning entry “Pet Dish TV: Chai, the Courageous Cat.”

Zachary’s inspiring piece profiles Chai, a feline who enters the world with numerous medical complications. The story reminds readers of the many felines who suffer similar situations and includes a strong call to action.

NE July Member Spotlight: Brigitte Pouliot
The Northeast Region is honored to feature long-time TICA member and regional advocate, Brigitte Pouliot, for its July Member Spotlight. Brigitte began her adventures in the cat fancy at the young age of just 6 years old, where she attended cat shows in shopping malls and treasured the cute satin ribbons she collected. A 10th specialty final hooked her in even further and the Anouchka Cattery was born in 1983. Despite an initial language barrier and losing her mother to cancer when she was only 28, Brigitte worked tirelessly to learn about the Persian breed and its development in breeding and showing circles. She has since earned four IW titles, enjoys entry clerking and ring clerking, and is always available to help those seeking assistance or mentorship. When she isn’t busy being a Senior Marketing Director, Brigitte enjoys running and hiking the Quebec mountains. Merci, Brigitte! The Northeast Region is proud to have you as one of its own.
