Trupanion Breaks Down the Importance of Keeping Your Cat Hydrated This Summer

The warm weather and sunshine that accompanies the summer months can be a welcome change, but these are also the hottest days of the year. Proper hydration is always important for the overall health of your cat and can be especially critical as we see temperatures increase.

Our friends at Trupanion, providers of medical insurance for the life of your pet, joined us to discuss the importance of proper hydration and offer insight into some of the causes and symptoms of dehydration in cats.

How cats become dehydrated

Dehydration in pets is a dangerous condition that results from them losing more fluid than they take in. This is primarily caused by insufficient water consumption, though over-activity, excessive sweating, and certain medical conditions can put an animal at risk. Both extreme heat and sudden temperature changes can also increase a cat’s water needs, especially if they have not had time to acclimate. Hotter days can call for more water, so don’t restrict your cat’s water intake for any reason unless your veterinarian advises you to do so.

The importance of proper hydration for cats

Whether you have a senior cat or a kitten, proper hydration is essential for the well-being of your pet. According to Trupanion veterinarian Dr. Caroline Wilde, “Dehydration can lead to serious health issues such as a urethral obstruction in male cats, constipation, or UTI.”

In fact, urinary obstruction and urinary tract infectious disease are two of the most claimed conditions that Trupanion records amongst their policy members. In the last two years, Trupanion saw average veterinary costs range from $1900-$2700 for urinary obstruction claims and $200-$400 for UTI claims. For claims of dehydration alone, the average cost was $600 based on data ranging from July 2017- July 2022.

Signs of dehydration in cats

Pay close attention to your cat and watch for cues that they are overheating or dehydrated. If you are concerned, they may be dehydrated, seek medical attention immediately. Depending on the severity of the condition, it may not be a simple matter of putting a freshwater bowl in front of them, so getting veterinary analysis is crucial. Some common signs your cat may be dehydrated include:

  • Lethargy
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Sunken-looking eyes
  • Dry-feeling mouth and nose
  • Weakness
  • Loss of skin elasticity (gently pinch an area of their skin and note how slowly it snaps back)

Protecting against unexpected vet bills

Watching for signs of dehydration is a great way to help make sure your cat is feeling happy and healthy this summer. But while we all try to keep our cats as safe as possible, we never know when we may need to make an unplanned trip to the veterinarian. Trupanion was created to help you budget for unexpected accidents and illnesses so that you can always focus on what matters most— the health of your cat.

Trupanion’s Breeder Support Program even lets breeders provide new kitten owners with an exclusive offer of Trupanion insurance coverage that waives all waiting periods. That means coverage goes into effect immediately so that breeders and pet owners can rest easy knowing their cats are protected when they head to their new homes. This program is completely free to join as a breeder, just click here to get started!

The MA Region is participating in this event! Right now, we have a collapsible wagon that will hold all the items donated to the raffle and will be included as part of what you can win! We are targeting items from the states that comprise all the MA Region. For example, items from the state of Pennsylvania could include a Penn State shirt, Eagles items, Steelers items, Hershey Kisses (the PA State Candy). Virginia could donate peanuts, peanut brittle, a 6-pack of beer, or wine from a Virginia vineyard. Maryland could include Old Bay, Ravens items, or anything crabby. New Jersey could include taffy from the shore, Fisher’s popcorn, or a Bruce Springsteen CD, among other items. Monetary donations are also accepted and will be used to purchase items. Romaine Halupa will be collecting items all summer and transport them to Chicago. Please contact Romaine if you would like to donate.

New MA Committee: As discussed at the June show in Lebanon, the MA region is forming a group to discuss and brainstorm ideas to make showing more feasible for everyone. We know show costs have been mounting and some resources that we have taken for granted have become limited. Show halls, hotels, gas, caging service, and many other factors that are integral to our hobby have made hosting and attending shows more of a challenge. This is a group to think outside the box. We know this is not solely a MA issue and input from other regions would be appreciated. Maybe you are a member that has not shown for a particular reason, your thoughts would be beneficial as well. Please contact Jane Handelsman for more information or to join the committee. Moving forward we can discuss a time to meet online to start generating ideas.

Learn the Latest TICA MA Regional News: To keep up with regional news, the MA region has two areas where you will be able to stay up to date with regional information:
