From the President’s Desk: A Message from TICA President Vicki Jo Harrison
Dear TICA Friends,
Proving TICA and our shows continue to move forward, it was my pleasure, after two long years, to finally celebrate all our deserving and hard-working 2020-2021 International Award winners in person this year at TICA’s 2021 Annual Awards Banquet. The long-anticipated event took place on January 29, 2022, in Houston, Texas, USA.
We began the night’s festivities with the recognition of the best cat, kitten, alter, household pet and household pet kitten from the 2019-20 show season as well as the 2020 Judge of the Year Steven Meserve. Congratulations to all the 2019-2020 award winners!
This year, for the first time, recognition was given to the cats who earned the Lifetime Achievement title. Each LA winner was awarded with a giant rosette designed by Vanadis Crawford using a combination of TICA rosette colors. Thank you, Vanadis for designing such a beautiful and unique rosette!
Along with all the recognition for all our fabulous felines, we recognized some very deserving, dedicated TICA members. TICA January 2022 Board Meeting: COO and TFMS Update
The TICA “legacy backlog” from TDS is now up to date. The Executive Office is now working on the backlog from the new platform (TFMS). Members and clients with outstanding tickets from TDS should be resolved as of now. For those who still have outstanding TDS tickets should log on to their TFMS account and submit a request to TICA’s Executive Office.
“Clearing up our legacy backlog will greatly decrease the wait times across the board,” said TICA Chief Operating Officer Danny Nevarez. “TICA’s new probationary staff are being trained and they are contributing a great deal to reducing the backlog. I want to sincerely thank all our members and clients for their patience as we have been working through this major business platform transformation and start to recognize the potential of in our new technology.”
Other TFMS updates include the ability to update the eye color on breeder slips as a self-service and the capacity to register a cat/kitten directly from a breeder’s slip. Additional self-service items are coming soon, which will also contribute to better turnaround times.
TICA has also posted a case-status page at the top of the TFMS homepage for most requested items. The table shows the current date of cases being worked by case type. The status will soon be added when you checkout your shopping cart. This table can be used to determine if you need to purchase rush service, based on the information in the table.
Read instructions on how to get a cat scored once the registration has been processed. As long as paperwork is in TFMS or at the EO for processing, you will NOT lose points from shows entered.
TICA January 2022 Board Meeting: Financial Report
TICA financials for the first half of the year (July – December) look very good compared to last year because of a continuing increase in registrations. Financials could also be influenced by the new way of working in TFMS since an order in TDS was not counted as income until after completion.

Nestle Purina’s Annual Support of TICA Education Programs: A very big thanks goes to Nestle Purina for their ongoing support of TICA and their generous annual bequeath of monies for TICA to use towards education. A small portion was awarded to the TICA Mid-Atlantic Region for a special educational event. Chris Kaelin PhD, Department of Genetics, Stanford University School of Medicine, presented his recently published research “Developmental genetics of color pattern establishment in cats” to a group of TICA exhibitors/members and the public.
TICA.org Update: Be on the lookout for the new TICA website to launch in late April.
TICA Board of Directors Names Vickie Fisher the Newest TICA Treasure
Last month, the TICA Board of Directors named Vickie Fisher the newest TICA Treasure during the TICA 2020-2021 Annual Awards Banquet. From time to time, the TICA Board of Directors select a member to be honored while living with the title “TICA Treasure.” The title is an old Japanese custom of honoring those who have contributed beyond measure to their chosen art, craft, or profession. Vickie joins an esteemed group of 13 honorees. See the complete list here.
Vickie served as TICA President & CEO from 2009 – 2014 and again from 2018-2020. While in office she achieved numerous financial successes for the Association, including refining a financial reporting and budgeting system, implemented operational cost savings, successfully integrated TICA into the multi-billion-dollar pet industry and achieved nonprofit status for TICA, which resulted in an immediate refund in excess of $70,000. She also created numerous business opportunities for TICA, including creating the association’s first business plan and marketing strategy, introduced online business services, implemented online voting, and developed TICA’s social media presence, all of which resulted in worldwide growth for the association.
TICA Board of Directors Inducts Martin Wood into TICA Hall of Fame
From time-to-time TICA’s Board of Directors select certain individuals, who have contributed immeasurably to the success of TICA, for membership in the TICA Hall of Fame. This honor may be awarded to persons living or deceased.
During last month’s 2020-2021 Annual Awards Banquet, the TICA Board of Directors inducted Martin Wood into the TICA Hall of Fame.
Martin Wood has been instrumental in the development of TICA Europe West, which is the United Kingdom, Scotland and Ireland. Martin has been a member of TICA since 2004. He bred Mainecoons under the cattery name Woodycoon and is still a member of the breed section.
He served as TICA Europe West’s first regional director, taking them from isolated status to full status. Martin spent countless hours and energy introducing the TICA system to many exhibitors and breeders that knew only the GCCF (Governing Council of Cat Fanciers) way of showing cats. Martin’s hard work opened a world of opportunity for TICA to expand into a part of Europe that the association had never been.
Even after Martin was no longer the regional director, he continued to contribute to the association in different capacities and is currently serving as the TICA Rules Committee Chairman.
Martin joins 14 other Hall of Fame recipients. See the complete list here.
Theresa Kempton Voted TICA Judge of the Year
Last month, TICA members voted Theresa Kempton 2021 TICA Judge of the Year during the TICA 2020-2021 Annual Awards Banquet.
Theresa Kempton started her love affair with cats – showing, breeding, and judging – when she went to her first cat show in 1985. She entered the UFO/AACE judging program in 1995 and joined ACFA to become an allbreed judge. Wanting to learn and grow more as a judge, she entered TICA’s judge program in 2008 and currently serves as a TICA Approved Allbreed Judge.
“When people ask me why I joined TICA my answer is because I wanted to go to Cat College, I wanted more,” said TICA 2021 Judge of the Year, Theresa Kempton. “TICA has taken me around the world. I love to judge and love the cats. It is an honor to be a TICA judge and a privilege to judge your cats.”
Her first cat was a red tabby Persian. After many years of showing locally, she began breeding Persians, Himalayans, and Exotics for 12 years. She became fascinated with Bengals in 1993 and placed all her long hairs and started a Bengal breeding program which lasted 15 years. During that time, she considered judging by encouragement from other exhibitors. Theresa did not take the role of possibly become a judge lightly. She borrowed a Maine Coon, Sphynx, Munchkin, and traded her Bengal for a Japanese Bobtail, and lived with them in her home so she could learn as much as possible about them.
Theresa currently serves as President of the Skyway Cat Club of Tampa Bay, Florida, USA. She is credited with putting on the first U.S. show after COVID shut things down in 2020. The club produces eight shows each year in Florida while helping other clubs in the area. Theresa began building Florida’s cat shows in 1995. As a result, Skyway Cat Club went from having one or two shows to producing eight shows each year, a total of 68 cat shows since 2006.
TICA Maine Coon Breed Committee Clarifies Breed Standards and Proposes Standard Revisions
Following several inquiries to the TICA Maine Coon Breed Committee, the committee would like to state the following:
Currently, the TICA Maine Coon standard only allows for blue or odd eyes in Maine Coons that are white or with white. Blue and odd eyed Maine Coons without white can be registered, but it should be remembered that they are not accepted for championship, and there are no plans to accept them. This non-standard trait appears to be dominant with unknown and/or possible harmful genetics. These cats should be registered correctly so if there does not appear to be any associated problems, and there is future interest to consider them for registration, they can be tracked.
We will be proposing (for your vote) a change to the following regarding acceptable colors/categories: Only dominant black-based (B/-) colors including the result of the sex-linked red allele (Xo). Non dominant black-based (b/-, b1/-) modified colors such as caramel, chocolate, cinnamon, lilac, and fawn are not allowed.
The Committee would like to take this opportunity to inform breeders/exhibitors that we are currently working to revise the Maine Coon standard to emphasize the overall balance desired in our breed, where one feature does not overshadow another. This revision will come to all current TICA Breed Section members for review and then subsequent vote.
The Maine Coon Breed Committee recommends breeders refrain from using the following in their breeding programs:
a. blue or odd eyed Maine Coons without white. b. unacceptable colors or categories. c. cats with extreme features.
The TICA Maine Coon Breed Committee consists of Liz Brown (Chair), Tereasa Brainerd, Janet Brown, Elaine Hawksworth-Weitz, Phillipa Holmes, Teri Matzkin, and Cari Tucker. Please feel free to contact a committee member for more information.

PraTICALI Cat Show Plays Host to NatGeo Wild Series: Painless Productions Filming 13-Week TV Series on the Human Animal Bond Between TICA Exhibitors and Their Show Cats
TICA was at its very best during the PraTICAI Cats show last month at Purina Farms Events Center in Gray Summit, MO. The event hosted a film crew from Painless Productions TV that filmed throughout the event to capture footage for a 13-week series that will highlight the human animal bond between TICA Exhibitors and their show cats.
The film crew conducted many interviews with exhibitors and captured TICA judging in action. The 13-week series, set to air on NatGeo Wild in mid-to-late 2023, will highlight TICA Exhibitors attending selected cat shows across the U.S. along with other individuals who exhibit/show their companion animals, such as chickens and rabbits. Painless Productions will film at the Evergreen Cat Fanciers show on February 12-13, 2022, in Ferndale, Washington. This event is closed to the public due to COVID restrictions.
Three Cat Behavior Changes to Look Out For Written By: Trupanion
Trupanion, medical insurance for the life of your pet, is proud to partner with TICA to support healthy, happy cats. Whether you are a breeder or pet owner, it’s important to monitor any changes in your cat’s behavior, as these can sometimes indicate other medical conditions. Trupanion veterinarian Dr. Sarah Nold joined us to discuss three common cat behavior changes and when you should seek veterinary care.
Cat stops eating. While a cat could stop eating due to a recent move, stress, or a change in food, it could also indicate that something more serious is going on. “If your cat continues not to eat or has a decreased appetite, it’s best to contact your veterinarian sooner than later, as a significant reduction in caloric intake can result in a serious condition called Hepatic Lipidosis,” cites Dr. Nold. Consider keeping a journal to track how much your cat is eating per meal.
Cat stops drinking. Hydration is vital for all our pets, and cats are no exception. Besides a change in diet from dry to wet food, or vice versa, the cause could depend upon the circumstance. “If you haven’t made a recent change in your cat’s diet, then you should consider contacting your veterinarian,” Dr. Nold says. Additionally, Dr. Nold points out, “Your cat may also not be drinking water if they are too weak, or it is too painful to get to the water dish.”
Cat not using the litter box. If you notice your cat stops using their litter box, this could be a cause for concern. Besides being a messy situation, this can also indicate an underlying behavior or health issue that needs to be addressed. “If your cat is in pain, like with arthritis, they may decide it’s easier or less painful to use the bathroom elsewhere instead of having to step up or jump into the litter box,” says Dr. Nold.
If you feel your cat is experiencing any abnormal behavior, it’s best to seek care with your veterinarian so a full assessment can be performed. That’s where Trupanion comes in. With no payout limits and the ability to pay your veterinarian directly at the time of checkout, Trupanion takes the stress and hassle out of vet visits.
If you’re a breeder, Trupanion also offers a free Breeder Support Program that allows you to provide your buyers with a special Go Home Day Offer. This offer lets them try out the full Trupanion policy with no waiting periods. That way, you can rest easy knowing your kittens are protected should they get into any mischief in their new home. The progress of cat science was forever changed in 2007 when an Abyssinian’s DNA was the very first to be decoded. Considered to be one of the oldest cat breeds, Abyssinians (Abys) are tremendously devoted felines. Their distinctive almond-shaped eyes resemble the elegance of the cat statues found in ancient Egyptian tombs. Easy to groom and care for, Abys make a great addition to a family. March 21 Deadline for Special Grant Proposals. EveryCat Health Foundation, in a special opportunity co-sponsored by Nestlé Purina Petcare and Mars Petcare, is funding grants that address the effect that dietary phosphorus and calcium to phosphorus ratio have on renal health in cats as well as biomarkers to detect early renal disease. Approximately $400,000 is available to fund proposals of sufficient scientific merit, relevance, and potential to impact feline health.
The overall goal of such research is to provide evidence that will lead to scientific consensus on safe levels and types of dietary phosphorus for feline diets. High priority areas that have been identified and will be given special consideration include:
- Investigation of factors that influence phosphorus bioavailability and metabolism including source and form of phosphorus in foods.
- Identification of biomarkers of renal injury (i.e., especially markers that detect early kidney changes before irreversible damage occurs).
- Identification of in vitro assays that correlate with in vivo function of phosphorus sources.
Deadline for submission is MONDAY, MARCH 21, 2022. Application guidelines can be found at https://everycat.org/the-latest/grants/open-grant-rfps/
