The Race for TICA President, Vice President, Breed Committee Officers Is On!
Vote Before Polls Close on November 23
Voting is now open to determine TICA 2020 President, Vice President, Breed Committees and Rule Proposals. All those who have been TICA members in good standing as of April 1, 2020 are eligible to vote.
Ballots were emailed on or about October 23, 2020 to all TICA members from “TICA Online” with the subject “TICA 2020 Election. Voting will close on November 23, 2020 at 11:59pm Central time.
The online ballot includes details about each proposal item which you can review before casting your vote. Learn more information about candidate platforms online. Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis Clinical Trial Seeks Participants
Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a severe and painful inflammatory disease involving the mouth and gums of cats. In most cases, the disease causes ulcers at the back of the mouth, tongue, gums, and occasionally the lips. FCGS affects cats of any age or breed.
Recent Winn-funded studies have led to a potential stem cell-based treatment called DentaHeal. This cell therapy may help to correct abnormalities associated with FCGS in cats.
Dr. Boaz Arzi at the University of California-Davis and VetCell Therapeutics USA, the manufacturer of DentaHeal are currently conducting an clinical trial intended to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of DentaHeal and are seeking cats that have been diagnosed with FCGS, which have not been cured by any currently available treatments. Patients must have had full or partial mouth extractions performed, confirmed with dental radiographs.

Cats and Dogs Take Over Mayor Race in California Neighborhood
This year the run for mayor in one California neighborhood literally turned into a dog and cat fight. The residents of 55th street in Oakland’s Golden Gate neighborhood took a break from the anxiety of 2020 and used pets this election cycle as a chance to share the importance of civic engagement with children.
The race for 55th Street mayor featured incumbent cat Wally who was seeking reelection by running on a pro speedbump platform, but was accused early on of running a smear campaign by fellow feline candidate Betty. Opponents included Betty, a 10-year old feminist and pro catnip Tabby whose slogan was ‘Change Meow’; eleven-year-old Shiba Inu dog Mimi, whose slogan was ‘She’ll bark when it matters’ and promised to keep the squirrels away on 55th Street; and six-year-old pit bull mix Macy whose slogan was ‘Keep Oakland Ruff’.
The election started as a means to teach kids about democracy, equity, and justice. On Halloween, neighborhood kids were asked to make a choice, put it in the ballot box, have a little talk about democracy in the United States. In accordance with California’s elections, the ballot featured ranked voting, in which participants rank their preferred candidates.
Nissan Gives Tiny Kei Cars to felines in cat cafés across Japan
While most carmakers tend to center their marketing around dog lovers, Nissan is going all-in with cats, at least in Japan. Learn how the Yokohama-based company is teaming up with a chain of cat cafés across Japan to promote the Nissan Dayz kei car.
How to Recognize Stress in Cats

TICA November Breed of the Month: Siberian
Known for their long history, with the earliest known reference dating to 1000 AD, these intelligent cats are natural problem solvers. The Siberian’s semi-longhair coat varies with the season — in winter, they have a thick, full, triple coat that would have protected them from the elements in native Russia but in summer, they shed their winter coat for a shorter, less dense variant. Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) Clinical Trial looking for Participants: Recent Winn-funded studies have led to a potential treatment for FCGS called DentaHeal. Health Study looking for Survey Participants: If your cat has had a cough for longer than two months, please fill out the survey. The information will be used for teaching, research, and publication. The goal is to improve the quality of life for our feline companions.
The survey takes only 15 minutes to complete and is open to any cat owner over the age of 18 years living with a cat diagnosed with a coughing condition lasting or requiring treatment for more than 2 months. All data will be anonymous. The data collected will be used exclusively by a research group at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Click here to take the survey.
